Middle School Supports (5th-8th)

Learning Together in the General Education Classroom

Whenever possible, we bring special education support right into the general education classroom so students can learn alongside their peers.

Co-Teaching

  • What it looks like: A general education teacher and a special education teacher teach together in the same classroom. They share full responsibility for lesson planning, teaching, and supporting all students.
  • The classroom environment: A co-taught class follows the standard grade-level curriculum with the same high expectations as any other classroom—it simply has two expert teachers in the room to ensure everyone gets the support they need.
  • Where it’s offered: Available at Roosevelt Middle School in ELA (English Language Arts) and Math across all grade levels.

Specialized Small-Group Support (Pull-Out Services)

When a student needs more intensive support or modified materials that cannot be easily provided during regular class time, they may receive pullout instruction. This means they spend part of their day in a smaller setting working directly with a special education teacher.

  • Middle School Instructional Classes: We offer specialized, small-group instruction in ELA, and Math using materials tailored to each student’s learning pace. These small group classes are full replacement classes that are the same length as the corresponding general education class.
  • Academic Strategies: A dedicated daily period where students receive direct help with executive functioning skills (organization, time management) and work on specific IEP goals.
  • Multi-Needs Classroom: For students who need intensive, direct instruction across core academic subjects and functional life skills. Our special education teacher works closely with general education staff to adapt science, social studies, and special classes (art, music, PE) so students remain connected to their grade-level community while receiving the individual instruction that they need in reading, writing, math and adaptive skills. Related service providers collaborate with the Multi-Needs teacher to provide some specialized services within the Multi-Needs classroom.
