Safety and Security

Safety and security are our first priority at District 90 Schools.  Safety planning is conducted regularly through a proactive and preventative lens utilizing best practices in school safety and in partnership with local public safety experts including the River Forest Police, River Forest Fire Department, and the Safety and Threat Assessment Specialists at West40, the Intermediate Service Center for West Cook County, and more.

Our work is focused in three areas: Facilities and Infrastructure, Procedures and Protocols, Emotional Health and Community Wellness.  Each area is reviewed periodically to ensure our plans reflect current best practices.  Key employees are assigned responsibilities and receive training in their roles.  We follow the Behavior Threat Assessment process in partnership with families, students and staff.  In the event of an emergency, all schools utilize the Incident Command System from the National Incident Management System.

Each year, schools conduct a comprehensive set of safety drills such as fire, bus safety, and lockdown drills.  In addition, students participate in annual safety workshops conducted by the River Forest Township in partnership with the River Forest Police and Fire Departments on topics such as community safety, personal safety, and online safety.  The District is committed to communicating with families in a timely manner during safety-related events.   Should you have any questions regarding school safety, please contact the Principal at your child’s school.

Safe Firearm Storage

Providing for safe firearm storage is one of many preventative actions we can take to keep our school buildings and community safe. If you have firearms in your home it is vital to keep them secured and out of reach of unintended users.  Please see this letter from the River Forest Village Police and Fire Departments, River Forest Township, River Forest Community Center, and District 90 Schools which outlines a few simple, highly effective practices that can help to reduce firearm-related incidents and protect children.
