WILLARD 2007-2008 Parent-Teacher Organization

 

Mission Statement:

The Willard PTO endorses the District 90 Educational Mission Statement to deliver academic excellence and foster a respect for self and others.  With these goals in mind, the PTO seeks to:

  • execute programs which enrich the learning environment, including areas outside the curriculum; offer social opportunities for Willard families and the larger community; model and encourage community service;

  • implement fund-raising programs to sustain the above activities, as well as meet school needs not funded by the District budget; and

  • facilitate communication between the home, school and District 90 administration.

PTO Officers & Programs:

PRESIDENT - Carmela Corsini

FIRST VICE PRESIDENT (Volunteers) The First VP oversees school committees that require significant volunteer assistance. - Susanne Hamaj

ROOM PARENTS & VOLUNTEERS: This committee coordinates 2 volunteer groups:Room Parents, who assist teachers with in-class activities, field trips, and the photography of such events, organize volunteers to coordinate a parent social, and operate the class telephone tree; and, Volunteers for school activities and fund-raisers on a single or ongoing basis. Both groups host the annual Staff Appreciation Luncheon.--- Sharon Halperin, Mary Jo Taira
ART APPRECIATION: This committee oversees replication of an Art Institute-designed program that enhances children's appreciation of art, stretches their visual imagination and increases their comfort level in discussing art. Each month, volunteers bring artwork to the classroom; discuss the artwork, its historical context and the artist's background; and, oversee the completion of a relevant, "hands-on" student project.--- Carole Giuntini, Anne Galkin
BIG HEARTS/LITTLE HANDS: This committee oversees a program designed to foster fundamental social values, namely, honesty, compassion, integrity, tolerance and an appreciation for the value and dignity of human life, within Willard students. The featured event is a Valentine's Day Tea for Seniors.--- Heidi Hamernik, Lisa Grimes, Karin Danganan, Holly Economos
HOSPITALITY/SOCIAL: This committee coordinates activities to welcome new families to Willard (New Families Receptions and Opening Day Coffee), provides staff meals during teacher conferences, and organizes the annual Holiday Luncheon and PTO Appreciation Reception.--- Sue Menna, Sally Ahlgren, Mary Capppelli
FAMILY LINK: This committee coordinates the "linking" of new families to Willard to current Willard families so as to ease their transition into school activities and programs.--- Suzanne Morrison, Sonia Green
BOOK PUBLISHING: This committee produces bound books for each child in each classroom. The children create illustrated stories to be published in these books.--- Lisa Rathe

SECOND VICE PRESIDENT (Student Activities) The Second VP oversees committees that directly benefit and involve students and yet, do not require independent fundraising to operate. This position also oversees the Special project Grant Program. Karuna Rawal

YEARBOOK: This committee coordinates publication of the Willard School Yearbook.--- Julie Dee, Lisa Gillis, Amy Matsumura, Anna Poulin
SCHOOL PICTURES: This committee coordinates the production of annual student pictures.--- Lisa Grimes, Ingrid Schroetter
SERVICE CLUB: This committee works with third and fourth grade students to heighten awareness of those less fortunate through meaningful, hands-on community service projects.--- Susan Lucci, Sally Ahlgren
SCHOOL SOCIAL: This committee organizes the annual Willard School Social a fun-filled event for students, siblings and parents.--- Terri Stupinski, Marika Panton, Cathy Josephs
PUBLIC RELATIONS: This committee shares information with the media and the community-at-large to publicize Willard's enriching school activities.--- Carolyn James
4th GRADE BREAKFAST: This committee coordinates the annual 4th grade breakfast held at the end of the year to celebrate the 4th graders' years at Willard. --- Roxanne Bajo, Robin Cowen, Cathy Josephs, Lucy Calabrese

THIRD VICE  PRESIDENT (Fundraising) The 3rd VP oversees school committees that serve as fundraising mechanisms for the PTO. These monies support PTO activities, programs and the purchase of extra amenities (i.e. computers, playground equipment, enrichment programs) that would otherwise be unavailable. - Moira Nield

PANCAKE BREAKFAST: This committee organizes a family breakfast in the fall.--- LaVerne Collins, Annie Doppes, Holly Economos, Sonia Green

SPIRIT SALES: This committee oversees the sale of Willard Wizard merchandise (T-shirts, sweats, etc.). Spirit items are worn by students and faculty on Friday Fun Lunch/Spirit days.--- Linda Speracino, Bonnie Parker

FUN LUNCHES: This committee oversees a program designed to provide a "fun" meal for students and a day-off for the daily lunch maker while raising revenues for the PTO. Children order meals in advance. Volunteer assistance is needed before, during and following each Friday Fun Lunch.--- Roma Steinke, Anna Poulin, Rosa Castellano, Russ Lorraine, Rebecca Watson
BOOK FAIR: This committee coordinates a 4-day sale of books, games and other educational items during fall parent-teacher conferences. A sliding percent of proceeds, based on gross sales, benefit the PTO.--- Ann Vogel, Andrea Fox, Andrea Lissuzzo, Lisa Rathe, Tammy Brenneman

KIDDIELAND: This committee organizes a fundraising event at Kiddieland for children and parents.--- Colleen Saleh, Lisa Gusloff

SCHOOL SUPPLIES: Each spring, this committee coordinates the sale of pre-packaged school supplies for the upcoming school year.--- Vicki Rohner,  Shelley Dunck
FLOWER SALES: This committee coordinates the flower sales with a percentage of sales benefiting the PTO.--- LaVerne Collins

BOXTOPS: This committee coordinates the collection/redemption of boxtops with the proceeds benefiting the PTO.--- Jennifer Staples

FOURTH VICE-PRESIDENT (Educational Programs) The Fourth VP oversees school programs that provide educational activities, primarily outside of the traditional classroom setting, for the children. - Amy Matsumura

SCIENCE FESTIVAL: This committee encourages the exploration of science by all Willard students and their families through an assortment of exciting science-related events:  a Science Fair, a Science Lab, and various scientific lectures and demonstrations.--- Anna Schaider, Michele Moore, Sheila Carson, Gayathri Sundaresan

ENVIRONMENTAL/SAFETY: This committee creates and implements programs that foster environmental awareness. In addition, this committee solicits and approves community based "safe houses" (McGruff) for children to approach in time of need and maintains a close liaison wit the River Forest Police Dept. to promote safety at home, school and in sports.--- Debra Klassman, Keary Cragan
JUNIOR GREAT BOOKS: This committee oversees a student-focused program of interpretive reading, writing and discussion that enables students to reach their potential as enthusiastic readers. Parent volunteers are trained brfore leading discussion groups.--- Diane Dygert, Danielle Roche, Mary Cappelli

ENRICHMENT PROGRAMS: This committee coordinates the selection and scheduling of programs throughout the year to enhance the children's social and intellectual growth.--- Roma Steinke, Monica Kruijssen

FAMILY MATH: This committee implements a nationally acclaimed program in which children and parents jointly play math games and problem solve to encourage and enhance daily math skills.--- Tara Bernstein, Becca Kaufman
CHESS CLUB: This committee provides an opportunity for children to play chess together bi-weekly for one hour after school. Group instruction and mock tournaments are offered.--- Russ Lorraine, Sue Arends
SCIENCE CLUB: This committee provides an opportunity for 4th grade students to explore "how" and "why" things work. The club meets bi-weekly for one hour after school. Led by an experienced science educator, the program offers hands-on experiments.--- Kitty Bingham
FOREIGN LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION PROGRAM (FLIP): This committee oversees the Willard School foreign language program where students are introduced to Spanish, French or Italian conversation and culture. Classes meet once a week. This program is directed by volunteer parents and taught by foreign language educators.--- Heidi Hamernik, Gigi Hoke, Kathy Kline
