Reading-In third grade, the students read several fiction and non-fiction books, some of which include: Ramona Quimby: Age 8, Stone Fox, and If you Traveled West in a Covered Wagon. We will also be using the Harcourt reading series. Much of our reading corresponds with the science and social studies topics that we study, so we will not read the selections from the reading textbooks in order. The students will also have opportunities to do small group novel studies (“Book Club”).
Writing- We begin the year with paragraph writing skills, and then quickly build up to writing five-paragraph essays. The ISAT writing test has returned so students will be beginning to write 5-paragraph essays by winter break. We write in all subjects. In addition to essays, students will be writing responses to reading selections, writing explanations for math problem-solving, and writing about their findings in science. Students will also learn research and note-taking skills in science and social studies.
Spelling-We will be using the Houghton Mifflin spelling program. In addition to this program, students will also work on Patricia Cunningham high frequency words ("word wall" words). Students will be expected to spell these high frequency words correctly in their daily work.
Math- We will follow the University of Chicago's Everyday Math Program. At the beginning of several of the units, a Family Letter will be sent home to show you what will be taught in that unit, and what you can do at home to help. Please hold on to the letter to refer to throughout the unit because it can be a valuable tool for helping your child with math. We also use supplemental materials along with the program for additional review and practice. We will focus on problem-solving through our weekly "Problem of the Week", which requires students to explain in writing how they solved a problem. Science- District 90 uses "Science Companion", which is also published by the University of Chicago, in addition to supplemental units. The topics covered in third grade in this program are: Light, Electricity, Habitats (Biomes), Animal Adaptations, and Simple Machines.
Social Studies- We will be using the Houghton Mifflin Social Studies program. Our units of study will be: The place we live, our land and resources; Old and new communities and communities in history; New settlers and people from many places; Our government and being an active citizen; Economics, community and trade; and Culture, holidays and heroes. Students will also learn about current events through the use of Time for Kids Magazine.
Cursive- District 90 uses the “Handwriting Without Tears” cursive program for students in grades 1-4. By January, the students will be expected to complete some of their assignments in cursive.
